The San Diego Padres were established in 1969 as an expansion team. Their name has local religious meaning.San Diego was the location of the first Spanish Mission in California, and the name Padre means priest or Father in Spanish. They currently play at Petco Park in the National League West Division having moved from Qualcomm Stadium in 2003. Their colors are blue and white.
The Friars have not had much success in Major League Baseball. Their first Division win came in 1984 and the progressed to meet the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series, winning 3-2. In their first World Series they faced the Detroit Tigers but lost the series 4-1. In 1998 they won the Division again and made it past the Astros in the NLDS and then the Braves in the NLCS to meet the Yankees in their second World Series, but didn't manage to win a game.
The Cincinnati Reds are the oldest professional baseball team in the Major Leagues and started life in 1881 as the Cincinnati Red Stockings before becoming the Reds in 1890. From 1954 they were briefly known as the Redlegs before going back to Reds in 1959. They got their name from the red stockings worn with their uniform. They presently play at the Great American Ball Park in the National League Central Division having moved from the Riverfront Stadium in 2003. Their colors are red, black and white.
The Reds have had a mixed history with some successes and long postseason drought periods. They won their first World Series in 1919 beating Chicago White Sox, but had to wait another twenty years for their next chance. A loss in the 1939 finals to the Yankees was followed a year later by their second title, besting the Tigers over seven games. The 1970s were the glory years with four Finals appearances and back to back world titles in 1975 and ‘76. A fifth World Series was won in 1990.
